I like to give back to the community that raised me because I believe that I would not be the person I am today had it not been the efforts and generous contributions of so many people around me. A couple of weeks ago, I was privileged to talk to more than two thousand students of the Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County. Mukumu is my alma mater and any one who went through that prestigious institution will admit that the late Sister Rita ( May her soul rest in peace) mentored us to be well rounded individuals. It was such an honour to speak alongside staff of Kenyatta University, Daystar University, Masinde Muliro University among others during the Careers week that is usually conducted in first term. My role on this day was to speak about my journey as a Social Behaviour Change Practitioner . Anyone who's close to me knows how passionate I am about transforming the lives of people through Social Behaviour Change. Nothing warms my heart like seeing individuals, communities and even countries embracing the desired behaviour in whatever field. As I prepared for the session and delivered my talk...I vividly remembered how over the years I wanted to persue different career paths. From the desire to be a magistrate, to a teacher to an economist etc. How I landed into a Sociology class and later got into Social behaviour change practice is a story for another day. Am happy that I was able to talk to the young ladies about this journey and generate lots of interest. I believe we all have a role to play in shaping the lives of the young men and women around us and beyond. #Givingbacktosociety#Mentoringyoungmenandwomen#Socialbehaviourchange#Transforminglivesthroughsocialbehaviourchange

Wondering what inspires our mentors? Here is what one of our mentors, Hastings Malunga, a third-year Sociology student at UNIMA, says:“Firstly, I really want to be someone who is behind other people's achievements and success stories. I never grew up with my biological parents, never had the kind of support parents offer for their children's success. I have come to learn that if it were not for the people outside my family, I would not be where I am standing today. I have people behind my story, so I want to write one for someone. YESI, therefore, is my enabler.Secondly, it is my passion to see someone excelling in life. My school background doesn't look good. I have failed miserably in school to the point that I came to believe I was a failure. Someone told me I have every reason to make progress, and he taught me to believe. Since then, the passion to share others the same experience grew, and because I have helped some, I believe there are still others out there who need my help. And YESI gave me such a platform; this also inspires me to go along with the movement. Finally, service unto others is one of my core values. So I want to serve others as much as I can.“Inspiring a brighter future through education.#MentorshipMatters #YESI

Musbah Shaheen on the importance of facilitating #interfaith discussions in which people "are not compelled to take sides":"Researchers consistently find that students who study, dine, or socialize with people from diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds become more appreciative of religious #diversity. It is likely that this type of engagement facilitates humanizing peers and colleagues to see the complexity of their narratives. But more importantly, these opportunities tend to be localized, low-risk, and, for the most part, low-stakes." #DEIB #conversation #StudentLife

''I was very interested to learn about government policies on economic, human rights, and social activities in South Asia and bring about change in my own country through them.NSU teaches about local and international policies through its SIPG program. There are many local and international experts here. NSU is one of the centers of policy and economic policy research, panel discussions of international experts, seminars, and multi-dimensional culture in the South Asian region. I chose NSU after seeing these. In my experience, the education systems of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are almost similar. I have learned a lot about rational understanding and social justice while coming here. My academic niche was various principles of governance and its implementation in society. I now understand the social and economic crisis in South Asia, and this will help me in the future.''— Nadarajah Pasadevan, Sri Lankan Student, Department of Political Science and Sociology, North South University

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 As budding professionals or undergraduates of higher institutions, we often focus on the obvious benefits of education: gaining knowledge, acquiring skills, and pursuing career goals. But let's delve deeper into the latent functions that shape our experiences beyond the classroom. Some students often focus purposely on the manifest function of education to achieve higher grades. Here is the synopsis of each of the concepts and I hope you benefit from it.𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:Intended Purpose: Education equips us with knowledge and skills relevant to our fields, driving our career aspirations.Conscious Goals: We articulate our ambitions, leveraging education to drive strategic initiatives and promote growth.𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:Unintended Consequences: Education extends beyond textbooks, offering practical skills and fostering leadership through extracurricular activities.Hidden Purposes Observed by Sociologists: Engaging in workshops, research, and community initiatives enriches our experiences, shaping us into well-rounded professionals.𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Reflecting on my journey, my education in Sociology provided not only academic knowledge but also practical skills in ethnography, stakeholder engagement, and leadership. Serving as President of a student association and a Public Relations Officer enhanced my communication and community engagement skills, complementing formal education.Let's recognize the multifaceted nature of education, embracing both its manifest and latent functions as we navigate our professional paths. #Education #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #GlobalSociology

The Federal Education Ministry has banned certain Cambridge textbooks due to their LGBTQ content and misrepresentation of Pakistan’s map.According to details, the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) has banned the printing, publishing, distribution, and teaching of Sociology and The History and Culture of Pakistan in the educational institutions of the federal capital. The educational institutions have been directed to submit an implementation report by May 10The banned textbooks include Sociology by Jonathan Blundell of Cambridge University Press and The History and Culture of Pakistan by Nigel Kelly of Peck Publishing Limited/Danish Publishing Private Limited, which was being taught in O-levels.The Federal Secretary of Education and Vocational Training, Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, noted that these books did not have a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Curriculum Wing, and their content includes material against the socio-cultural values of Pakistan.PEIRA has issued a notification stating that the printing, publishing, distribution, and teaching of these books will be prohibited, and legal action will be taken against violators under Section Four A of the PEIRA Act. The educational institutions’ management must ensure that these books are not available in any institution.According to Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, the Sociology book includes content on same-sex marriage that goes against Pakistan’s social and cultural values. Additionally, the second book wrongly describes Pakistan’s political history and includes a misprinted map of Pakistan. He added that the National Curriculum Council reviews all textbooks while PEIRA implements them.PEIRA’s notification has been sent to the principals and chief executive officers of all private educational institutions in the federal capital. The Ministry of Education had also sent a letter on April 28, and the books have been banned under Section Four A of the PEIRA Act. #education #management #training #university #legal #pakistan #culture #content #printing #publishing #sociology #teaching

In a recent community research i did as a Sociology student and Community Manager on THE DEMISE OF AFRICA CULTURE AND MODEL OF COMMUNICATION where i serve as a participant observe. It is understandable that acculturation and technology is knee to development and other social factor that influence cultural change. Nevertheless, the women are the real carrier of our culture and the growth or demise depends so much on them.2 out of 10 males hardly give concern to cultural practices except those who are from the old time Yoruba kingdom with a chieftain family back. The responsibility and struggle for survival takes the larger part of the men thinking which make them have less concern on culture at some point. The women as the main transmitter of our culture can't be over emphasised as it is clear from the stage of pregnancy to children upbring, how knee the mother is to culture is how knee the children would be even up to old age, it would be seen in them. So, the understanding of our culture and appreciation of our culture alongside the model of communication in our society rest a lot on the kind of women in our society, how much they value culture, their communication method (manners of doing thing and child correction, reinforcement and all).In addition, the kind of women we breed in our society and how modest they are with the culture would tell if the culture would still remain and and be transmitted to other generations or would die with them. They way we communicate now a days is as a effect of the culture we a trained with i. ea child brought up with the fear and not respect for his parent might loose the communication skill and how to express him or herself to people. Child brought up with sending text message to parent to greet them even when in same building would not know the value of communication and how to express one sef.In conclusion, the sustainablity of our culture is 90% rested upon the women in our society and they are the main transmitter and the real guardian of our culture. My research is open for comment, and divers opinion...#sociology #socialimpact #societyandculture #society #culturechange #culturaltourism #culturalheritage #culturalheritage #cultureshift #women #communicationPicture @ojudeoba Ìjẹ̀bú 2022👇
