101 Dalmatians Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture

The book was first published in 1956. Notwithstanding the story's origin, both film versions were major hits for Walt Disney and played a huge role in making the Dalmatian among the most famous dog breeds in the world.

Included in this latest bundle a litter of puppies from 101 Dalmatians, and while there aren't 101 bespoke cards (there are five variations for collectors) you can still have 101 of them if you're some kind of freak who likes to lose.

The Hundred and One Dalmatians is a 1956 children's novel by Dodie Smith about the kidnapping of a family of Dalmatian puppies. It was originally serialized in Woman's Day as The Great Dog Robbery, and details the adventures of two dalmatians named Pongo and Missis as they rescue their puppies from a fur farm.

However, when their 15 puppies are kidnapped by two thieves hired by the greedy Cruella De Vil, who plans to make a fur coat with their skin with other puppies, Pongo and Perdita have to rescue them before it's late.

Because that's what the original novel by Dodie Smith was called. The Dalmatians consist of 97 puppies that Cruella de Vil kidnapped to make her Dalmatian coat, Pongo and Missus, the parents of a litter of 15 puppies and Perdita an old liver spotted Dalmatian hired as a wet nurse for Pongo and Missus puppies.

When there is a growing demand for a certain dog breed that becomes part of the “popular culture” this phenomenon is known as The Dalmatian Syndrome. This moniker goes back to 1985 & 1991 with the re-release of Disney's 101 Dalmatians movie that sparked a rise for the demand of this breed.
